Magnolia 6th-8th Grade Families:
Cross Country News from Coach Tamo:

The Nevada County Athletic League (NCAL) is permitting the cross country season to begin this spring. The season will be 6 weeks long, beginning March 1 and ending April 16. The week of spring break will not have any practices or meets.
The intention of this survey is to gather team roster information.  Due to COVID guidelines and protocols, the practices and meets must follow strict guidelines.  One in particular is that meets can only be run between two schools.  I need to know the number of students in each grade who are interested in joining the team so we can schedule meets at the coaches’ meeting Wednesday evening.  Due to the strict guidelines, many of the schools who usually host meets will not meet the COVID facility requirements this year.  Because we have fewer venues and can only have two teams per meet, the number of races will be much less.  We are hoping to have at least 4-6 races this season, but that is yet to be determined.  The schools who can host are available on Mondays and Wednesdays, so practices will most likely run on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Final practice/meet schedule to be determined after the coaches meeting. Running on your own at home will be encouraged on non-practice days.
I am sharing all of this with you so you can make an informed decision as to whether running this season is the right choice for your child and family this year.  I am super excited that we get to go out and run, but I want it to be clear that this will not be the same as in years past.  I am determined to have a fun, safe, and exciting cross country season!"

Students received a google interest form in the email from Mr. Pless on 2/16/21.  If you have any questions for Ms. Tamo please email [email protected].

Parents of Hybrid/Blended Students:

Please log in to your parent portal and read and sign the Parent Agreement. We are going into uncharted territories and we need your help. Everything that we have learned about the prevention of COVID-19 has indicated that we are only as strong as our weakest link. We, as a district, have worked hard to create systems that minimize the risks to our students and staff, but there may still be risk present. Please sign that you will take the following steps to keep the whole community safe and allow use to continue to offer in-person classes with our students. Daily Symptom Checklist

I/We will commit...

  • to complete the daily symptom check of my student before I place them on a bus or send them to campus
  • to notify my student's school if there are any health concerns and take the steps outlined in the Daily Symptom Checklist.
  • to sending my child to school with a mask and support the school in making sure all students are compliant in all safety protocols.
  • I understand that even with all safety precautions that are being taken, there is always the risk that exposure to COVID-19 may occur.

8th Grade Field Day
***REMINDER***ZOOM MEETING TONIGHT
Hello Parents of 8th Grade Students,
The end of the year is just around the corner and these last few months will be our student(s)' last in the Pleasant Ridge Union School District.  Can you believe it? Whether your child(ren) started out in the Pre-K program or just entered the district last year, one thing's for sure, this graduating class of 2021 is a great group of kids.  Let's celebrate their year of hard work and perseverance with a fun event that will put a smile on their faces and fond memories in their hearts for years to come.  The PTM would like to organize a field day on campus for all the 8th graders, and we need your help for it to be successful.  Please join the "8th Grade Field Day Planning Meeting" next Thursday evening, February 4th at 6:30pm via Zoom.  This will be a quick meeting to establish committees, perimeters of COVID protocol and action items to get going so that we have plenty of time to pull this amazing event together.  Students are absolutely welcome to attend and give suggestions.  The more the help, the easier it is for everyone involved, so talk to your friends and buddy up; everything's more fun when you have a friend to do it with.  Please see attached flier for complete information.  Here is the hyperlink for the meeting:
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday night and to planning this fun event!

Parents of Eighth Grade Students:

Ghidotti Early College High School is now accepting applications for the 2022 school year. Application deadline is January 29, 2021. Information and the application are available at
A note about this year: COVID has impacted just about every aspect of our lives and Ghidotti's application process is no different. Most years we screen applicants to make sure they're at grade-level (ready for 9th grade math, English, and Biology), but this year the usual measurements are either unavailable or unreliable. So, we're going to assume all applicants are at grade-level. If there are more applicants than spaces available, selection will be made through a lottery.

Parents Corner:

Harvest of the Month:
This week students will be tasting multicolor carrots from First Rain Organic Farm near Nevada City.  Did you know while the  root of the carrot is most commonly eaten, the leafy green tops are also edible and quite nutritious.  Carrots are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant form of vitamin A. Beta carotene is important for eyesight, skin, and growing bodies.  They are also good sources of vitamin B6 and vitamin K.  As a member of the Apiaceae family, carrots are cousins of celery, fennel, and parsley.

Nightly Check-In

Thank you for supporting our schools.

***Reminder***

We wanted families to know about an interesting local program open to middle school students.

YMCA Model United Nations is a program for middle school students (grades 6-8) designed to promote engagement with, and understanding of, their world. The program relies on an experience-based model, where participants learn by doing - collaboratively developing solutions to real world issues and presenting them to their peers and international experts. Over the course of the program participants will learn the history and purpose of the UN, improve their grasp of world geography, discuss and debate major international issues, and gain an appreciation for multiple world cultures.

2021 YMCA Model United Nations program registration is now open. You're invited to join us for our Family Information Zoom Tuesday, January 12 from 5-6pm.  Zoom links are at the end of this email.

The program structure includes weekly delegation meetings, three cultural events (approximately 45-60 minutes each) and 2 regional conferences (2-3 hours per day) with participants from across Northern California.  Due to Covid-19 all programming for the 2021 program will be virtual

Meetings: Tuesdays from 5-6:30pm starting January 19, 2021

Conference Dates: April 18 and May 22-23

Cultural Events: March 9, April 6, and May 11

Program Cost: $250.00 - Financial Assistance Available

For our returning Ambassadors, we will be uniting as one delegation this year - the Capitol Coalition Delegation - and look forward to welcoming new participants from throughout our YMCA service area which stretches from Oroville to El Dorado Hills to Yolo County, to all of Sacramento. It's one benefit to our virtual format for sure! We've been running our virtual high school program since August and have learned a lot along the way. This year's MUN program builds from what we have learned in the virtual space since last year and our program has been significantly refined to match both the virtual world and the context of our times.

Topic: Capitol Coalition MUN Info Session
